Remediation is the process of bringing a condition back within acceptable limits — returning a system to conformance with its intended behavior or specification. The term comes from environmental and regulatory engineering, where remediation means cleaning up a site that has fallen out of compliance.

Unlike fix, which implies something was broken, remediate implies a known standard was violated and is being restored. The standard existed before the deviation; remediation closes the gap between current state and required state.
