Defining or implementing connections between subsystems or components

Interface work defines or implements the boundary between two systems — the contract that governs how they communicate. Interfaces are not internal to either system; they exist at the seam between them.

Good interface work makes the boundary explicit and stable. Implicit interfaces — where two systems communicate through shared assumptions rather than defined contracts — are a source of coupling. Naming and formalizing these boundaries is itself a category of engineering work.
