The classification of a term — groups terms into named families within the vocabulary

A genus is a level of classification — borrowed from biological taxonomy, where genus groups species that share structural characteristics. In this vocabulary, genus describes the type of a term: the family it belongs to within the system.

category and severity are both genera, but they describe different dimensions of a change. Adding a new genus extends the vocabulary into a new dimension without restructuring what already exists.
